How to make a Ping Pong Ball | Easy 4-Step [Home DIY Process]

Before getting started, I would like to make some points clear to you guys. Well, it's not practical to make ping pong balls at home or follow any DIY method except if you are a professional. The reason for this is that a lot of measuring work goes in the process, and you need to be really precise with that. A slight change in the measurements could end up ruining the end product.

Making of a Ping Pong Ball Explained

The old ping pong balls were just made of cork and bits, but these days you will only find the advanced version of the balls. To build the advanced level of ping pong balls, you will require some additional types of machinery to get the task done.

The main component used in a ping pong ball is celluloid. This compound is the same thing which is used in the making of a photographic film. It is not completely plastic, but in fact, they are made of nitrocellulose and camphor. But how is a basic ping pong ball made?

Warning- the process which you are going to read makes use of intense heat, so make sure that you have your protective gloves on. If you are unsure about the processing, then get an elder for assistance.

All set? Let's start!

Materials needed for the making of the Ping Pong ball are listed below:

  • Syringe

  • Pure Oxygen gas

  • Heat Gun

  • Celluloid Thermoplastic

  • Temperature-resistant gloves

  • Freezer

  • Iron ball Mold

Step 1

You need to apply direct heat to the thermoplastic using the heat gun. Make sure that you are wearing the temperature-resistant gloves since you need to hold the plastic in one hand. At this moment, the plastic will start to melt.

Step 2

Place this plastic material inside the iron mold.

Step 3

After you are done with this, place the syringe inside the iron mould. This needs to be done so that there is some oxygen getting injected into the mold. Leave the syringe inside the mold, and leave the mold in the

freezer to harden.

Step 4

Check the mold next day, and you will find the ball taking the round shape slowly. You are done with the making! Your Ping pong ball is ready!

Now, in case you don't have a syringe for the process, you can make use of a pencil instead. You just have to create an air hole inside the mold, and this can be done using a pencil too.

This way, you can create your personalized Ping Pong Ball at home. But I would still recommend you guys to purchase one, as the process is a bit complex one. Otherwise, it still can be tried if you are so confident in the making.
